For my first art post here, here's some tokusatsu OCs I made for a web novel I wanna plan out and write at some point.
Meet Skull Vulcan
They're basically a horror themed Power Rangers/Sentai team consisting of a couple humans, a Frankenstein monster, a vampire, a werewolf and an alien.
Design wise, I took some inspiration from @mosquitoking's "Power Rangers Terror Force" artwork and put my own spin, like the skull shaped helmets and their changer belts, which utilize VHS tapes.
All of the designs you see here, I made on an app on my phone. It definitely took a while but I think I did alright with these.

Power Rangers 2017 failed in box office because it had subtext representation AND OUTRIGHT, directly stated representation of multiple minority groups.. that wasn’t hateful.

Trini is heavily implied to be a lesbian or bi woman. When Zack asks her about boyfriend troubles and she says no, he pauses and asks “..girlfriend troubles?” She responds to this by looking away and remaining quiet.
(For context, Zack has been shown before this to be attracted to her. After this scene, and even DURING this scene, Zack respects her even without outright confirmation and immediately stops his advances, which is ALSO insane in a good way)
Billy is a black boy who is also autistic. He isn’t portrayed as particularly aggressive, stupid, or as any other common stereotype of black men. He’s also very much socially awkward, but his friends don’t mock him for it. The most they do is cut him off if the situation calls for it. They acknowledge his support needs and adhere to them! When Jason hugs Billy and Billy asks Jason to stop touching him, instead of the common “it’s just a hug dude”, Jason listens.
Zack is a complete subversion of Asian stereotypes in film. While he does take care of his mom (because they live ALONE in a trailer park and she’s heavily implied to have cancer) he’s not a studious kid. He skips school most days, he’s loud, he’s borderline eccentric.
Especially in the 2017, post 2016 Election political scene of the USA at the time of this film’s release, I feel like this probably had a MAJOR part to do in it’s failure at the box office.
(Another part might be the way they handled Rita Repulsa and the lack of morphing until the last 40-30 minutes of the movie, but that’s another story.)

My childhood:
For like a year in junior high, I asked people to call me Dustin, which is not my name. I don’t really remember why I wanted them to call me Dustin but I think it was because my favorite character at the time was named Dustin and I thought he was the coolest dude ever because he had a motorcycle. And then in high school I had to work with this girl on a project and she called me Dustin, and it unlocked memories I had long since forgotten. And I remembered that just now because they took most of the Power Rangers series off Netflix.
I was a huge Powers Rangers fan since I was 4 (I still remember my first episode), and remained a fan in 2010 when I found out about Sentai (thanks Dino Thunder) but started to become less interested the following year with Gokaiger (as well as finding out about Kamen Rider. OOO and Fourze are beloved to me to this very day), but I always continued to watch PR and be informed about it thanks to my little brother (who became an fan during the 2010s), and it's still a huge part of my childhood.
I like the Disney era and always felt that, in some aspects, was an natural evolution from the Saban Entertainment era (once I started watching them when I was 9), but I knew that it was because of the love and care given by the staff, and not by the company themselves, who never liked the franchise to the point where they tried to kill them multiple times since they felt it never fit their brand, and only became their property as a result of them buying Fox Family/Freeform (and with it, Saban's library).
Sure, Saban Brands has issues (especially during their first half), and Hasbro treated the franchise very poorly, but at least it wasn't the sheer Apathy demonstrated by the Mouse Company, which is why so many of us are worried about the involvement of Disney+ in the possible reboot, if it happens (i'll take any news with grains of salt unless I see any footage or photos). Sure, Disney's involvement would mean that the reboot would have a decent budget, but it might also mean that there's an chance the show won't get the proper care (or tone) it deserves or needs.
I hope the reboot's a success if it happens, especially if it has the involvement of the people responsible for the Percy Jackson series.

I've been recently getting back into Power Rangers/ Super Sentai and I just wanna list off some of my favorites with images in no particular order
Tokusatsu is a crazy TV show genre cuz the show will literally have the most emotionally compelling story ever told with action scenes keeping you on the edge of your seat, and then the hero pulls out a fucking Hasbro toy for a weapon.
