Writing Prompt #5

Writing Prompt #5

The Hero of the story is near-constantly injured thanks to frequent attacks by villains, hence why they require two doctors to take care of them.

The doctors, A and B, tend to not get along very well, but are willing to take a bullet for the Hero at any time.

However, this time around they couldn't, and now they face the struggle of having to work together to save the Hero's life.

The question is: do A and B grit their teeth and get through it, or does their pride get in the way at the cost of Hero's life?

10 Non-Lethal Injuries to Add Pain to Your Writing

New Part: 10 Lethal Injury Ideas

If you need a simple way to make your characters feel pain, here are some ideas:

1. Sprained Ankle

A common injury that can severely limit mobility. This is useful because your characters will have to experience a mild struggle and adapt their plans to their new lack of mobiliy. Perfect to add tension to a chase scene.

2. Rib Contusion

A painful bruise on the ribs can make breathing difficult, helping you sneak in those ragged wheezes during a fight scene. Could also be used for something sport-related! It's impactful enough to leave a lingering pain but not enough to hinder their overall movement.

3. Concussions

This common brain injury can lead to confusion, dizziness, and mood swings, affecting a character’s judgment heavily. It can also cause mild amnesia.

I enjoy using concussions when you need another character to subtly take over the fight/scene, it's an easy way to switch POVs. You could also use it if you need a 'cute' recovery moment with A and B.

4. Fractured Finger

A broken finger can complicate tasks that require fine motor skills. This would be perfect for characters like artists, writers, etc. Or, a fighter who brushes it off as nothing till they try to throw a punch and are hit with pain.

5. Road Rash

Road rash is an abrasion caused by friction. Aka scraping skin. The raw, painful sting resulting from a fall can be a quick but effective way to add pain to your writing. Tip: it's great if you need a mild injury for a child.

6. Shoulder Dislocation

This injury can be excruciating and often leads to an inability to use one arm, forcing characters to confront their limitations while adding urgency to their situation. Good for torture scenes.

7. Deep Laceration

A deep laceration is a cut that requires stitches. As someone who got stitches as a kid, they really aren't that bad! A 2-3 inch wound (in length) provides just enough pain and blood to add that dramatic flair to your writing while not severely deterring your character.

This is also a great wound to look back on since it often scars. Note: the deeper and wider the cut the worse your character's condition. Don't give them a 5 inch deep gash and call that mild.

8. Burns

Whether from fire, chemicals, or hot surfaces, burns can cause intense suffering and lingering trauma. Like the previous injury, the lasting physical and emotional trauma of a burn is a great wound for characters to look back on.

If you want to explore writing burns, read here.

9. Pulled Muscle

This can create ongoing pain and restrict movement, offering a window to force your character to lean on another. Note: I personally use muscle related injuries when I want to focus more on the pain and sprains to focus on a lack of mobility.

10. Tendonitis

Inflammation of a tendon can cause chronic pain and limit a character's ability to perform tasks they usually take for granted. When exploring tendonitis make sure you research well as this can easily turn into a more severe injury.

This is a quick, brief list of ideas to provide writers inspiration. Since it is a shorter blog, I have not covered the injuries in detail. This is inspiration, not a thorough guide. Happy writing! :)

Where can I find accurate medical information on injuries. Like treatment, severity, and of course how long it would take to bleed out. I CAN'T FIND ANYTHING-

Okay I’m currently furious that migraines are often so blindly easy to treat and I had to find this out myself at the age of 26 when I’ve been to a neurologist since I was 11 lol so I’m about to teach you two neat and fast little tricks to deal with pain!

The first is the sternocleidomastoid muscle, or the SCM muscle.

Okay I’m Currently Furious That Migraines Are Often So Blindly Easy To Treat And I Had To Find This

This big red section is responsible for pain around the eye, cheekbone, and jaw, as well as some temple pain. Literally all you have to do is angle your head down a little, angle it away from the side that hurts, and then you can gently pinch and rub that muscle. I find it best to start at the bottom and travel upwards. The relief is so immediate! You can increase pressure as you feel comfortable doing so.

Here is a short and easy video showing this in action

The second is a fast and easy stretch that soothes your vagus nerve, which is the nerve responsible for calming you down. The vagus nerve, for those unfamiliar, is stimulated by deep breathing such as yawning, sighing, singing, or taking a deep breath to calm your anger in a tense situation.

You can stretch this out by sitting up as straight as possible (this does not have to be perfect to work) and interlacing your fingers. Put your hands on the back of your head with your thumbs going down the sides of your neck and, while keeping your face forward, look all the way to one side with just your eyes. Hold that until you feel the urge to breathe deeply or yawn, or until you can tell there’s a change. Then do the same thing on the other side. When you put your arms down, you should clearly be able to turn your head farther in both directions. If the first session doesn’t get rid of your migraine, rest and repeat as many times as necessary. I even get a little fancy with it and roll my eyes up and down along the outer edge sometimes to stretch as much as I can.

If you need a visual here’s a good video on it. I know some of the language they use seems questionable but this is real and simple science and should not be discarded because it’s been adopted by the trendy wellness crowd!

I seriously cannot believe I didn’t hear a word of this from any doctor in my life. Additionally, if you get frequent recurring migraines, you may want to see a dietician. Migraines can be caused by foods containing histamines, lectin, etc. and can also be caused by high blood pressure in specific situations such as exercise, stress, and even sex.

If any of this information helps you I’d love to hear it btw! It’s so so fast and easy to do. Good luck!

No Way - I'm Irish

A paralegal I know was working through a stack of medical records.  There was a section for types of exercise.  One of the exercise categories was "Run."

The answer provided by the patient appeared to say, "No Way, I'm Irish."

Upon closer examination the entry was in fact, "No Way, I wish."

NASA Spotlight: Astronaut Jonny Kim

NASA Spotlight: Astronaut Jonny Kim

Dr. Jonny Kim was selected by NASA to join the 2017 Astronaut Candidate Class. He reported for duty in August 2017 and having completed the initial astronaut candidate training is now eligible for mission assignments to the International Space Station, the Moon and eventually Mars. A U.S. Navy SEAL, Kim completed more than 100 combat operations. Kim was commissioned as a naval officer through an enlisted-to-officer program and earned his degree in mathematics at the University of San Diego and a doctorate of medicine at Harvard Medical School. Born and raised in Los Angeles, California to Korean-American immigrants, he enjoys spending time with his family, outdoor activities, academic and professional mentoring, strength training and lifelong learning.

Dr. Kim took some time from his job as a NASA astronaut to answer questions about his life and career! Enjoy:

Why did you apply to be an astronaut?

For many reasons. I think that humans are natural explorers. There is a calling in all of us to explore the unknown, push the boundaries and redefine what is possible. I’m drawn to the physical and mental challenges of space exploration and the teamwork required to complete such an objective. And finally, the opportunity to do something good for our country, for humanity, and to inspire the next generation of thinkers, leaders, explorers and scientists.

What was your favorite memory from astronaut training?

image

I’m a big believer that people can grow stronger bonds with each other when they succeed through shared hardship. And I think that developing relationships with one another is one of the best ways to forge successful team skills to be successful in any endeavor. With that context, I can tell you that my favorite memory from astronaut training was traversing the deep canyon slots of the Utah Canyon Lands for almost 2 weeks with my classmates. We hiked trails, climbed canyons, swam through deep, dark, cold and murky waters and forged through uncertainty, all while being together. This shared hardship was not only fun, but it helped us grow closer to one another. It’s one of the fondest memories I have when I think about my amazing classmates, and through that shared hardship, I know I can count on any one of my fellow astronauts when the going gets tough.

If you could play any song during launch, what would it be?

Don’t Stop Believin’ by Journey.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

I would tell myself to always follow your passion, never stature or money, because following a life of passion is long-term, sustainable and usually helps others. Be accountable for your mistakes and failures, and maintain the humility to learn from those mistakes and failures. And finally, I would caution myself that all worthwhile goals are difficult to obtain, but with the right attitude and hard work, you can accomplish anything.

How did your time as a Navy Seal impact your astronaut training?

image

Being a Naval Special Warfare Operator taught me that humans are capable of accomplishing ten times what their bodies and mind tell them. I learned there are no limits in life, and the biggest setback one can have is a poor attitude. I learned the value of strong leadership and accountability. I also learned the meaning of sacrifice, hardship, teamwork, love and compassion. All these traits helped me to develop the hard and soft skills required to be an astronaut.

How do we prepare medically for long duration missions? What tools, resources, medications do we anticipate needing, and how do we figure that out?

This is a great question and the answer is evolving. The way we answer this question is by being thoughtful and consulting the medical communities to weigh the pros and cons of every single decision we make regarding this. Mass plays an important factor, so we have to be mindful of everything we bring and how we train for it.

Who was the first person you called after being selected to be an astronaut?

image

It would have been my wife but she was with me when I heard the news. The first person I called was my mom.

What is one item from home that you would bring to space?

A picture of my wife and kids.

What does it mean to you to be part of the Artemis generation of astronauts?

NASA Spotlight: Astronaut Jonny Kim

It means that I have a duty and obligation to serve humanity’s best interests. To explore the unknown, push boundaries and redefine what’s possible. It means I have an immense opportunity to serve as an example and inspiration to our next generation of leaders and explorers. It also means there is a hard road ahead, and when the mission calls for us, we will be ready.

What are three personal items, besides photos of family and friends, that you would bring with you on your first spaceflight?

An automatic watch, because the engineering behind a timepiece is a beautiful thing. An American flag, because I proudly believe and uphold the principles and ideals our country stands for. And finally, a nice journal that I can put handwritten thoughts on.

Thank you for your time, and good luck on your first spaceflight assignment!

Follow Jonny Kim on Twitter and Instagram to keep up with his life as NASA astronaut.

It’s not too late to APPLY to #BeAnAstronaut! Applications close TOMORROW, March 31.

Purchasing Medical Equipment for Hospitals

For the individuals who are responsible for making purchases on behalf of a hospital, whether it be to restore the practice or even purchase expensive medical equipment, the most concerning aspect is where to actually go for this restorative work, or new equipment for a clinical department.

Hospital copa star is a hospital based in Brazil that are aware of these costs, with recently implementing a new department to the hospital.

In the likelihood that you have previously purchased medical equipment, it is probable that you have developed relationships and purchasing channels to which the hospital/medical equipment is purchased. Having entered the twenty first century a good while ago, buying restorative hardware on-line has become an affordable and is frequently utilised by more and more medical professionals to present date. Points of interest of obtaining healing facility hardware on the online One of the principal focal points of obtaining restorative gear on-line should be an in depth alternative of selections. Substantial on-line stores, as an example, Amazon have secured sections of land and sections of land of room wherever it's shoddy, and have created laptop driven appropriation channels and accomplices to induce the hardware out quickly and fruitfully. Connected to powerful utilization of medical equipment dealers at the palm of your hands.  Due to the fact that health equipment is so readily available to purchase online, with someone in Brazil being able to import a CT machine from America, the cost of purchasing these pieces of equipment are substantially lower online, compared to purchasing face-to-face, with the sheer increase in sellers online. Also, due to the fact that this medical equipment can be marketed all around the world in a matter of seconds, it allows for lower storage prices, with sellers not having to store the item for long. The third most popular viewpoint is transportation. whereas some therapeutic gear could be overwhelming and will seem to be arduous to deliver, once it slow the in depth on-line organizations have patterned approaches to move safely and with care. The transportation are often over night as a rule to anywhere within the USA, and in most demoralised eventualities won’t take over some days. What’s a lot of, the expertise demonstrates that, in depth on-line organizations a lot of typically than not stick with their delivery time gauges. It simply bodes well, they don’t have AN imposing business model over the administration, and during this manner it's to their greatest advantage to exactly and firmly appraise shipping time. that's the rationale, as a rule, you'll be able to expect your conveyance prior warranted. Inconveniences of obtaining therapeutic/medical gear on the online Without a doubt, there area unit inconveniences of buying on the online additionally. Here and there, you'd merely feel immensely improved on the off likelihood that you just will extremely observe the factor, touch it, before you get. that bodes well. In any case, after you area unit a suffered emptor, you may be of the nice from the terrible, you may have the capability to understand the nice item from the imperfect item on-line simply by considering the name (a ton of huge producers provide specifically or through in depth on-line outlets), the composed shopper surveys, and also the delivery and come back guarantees from the trafficker. thought of these, the inconvenience of not having the capability to externally examine the factor before buying aren't as restrictive as they will seem to be initially, still for larger things, as an example, therapeutic crash trucks.

What’s a Space Headache?

Headaches can be a common complaint during spaceflight. The Space Headaches experiment improves our understanding of such conditions, which helps in the development of methods to alleviate associated symptoms, and improve the well-being and performance of crew members in orbit. This can also improve our knowledge of similar conditions on Earth.

Could somebody be a paramedic if they were missing a forearm?

Y’know, sometimes a question comes along that exposes your biases. I’m really, really glad you asked me this.

My initial instinct was to say no. There are a lot of tasks as a paramedic that require very specific motions that are sensitive to pressure: drawing medications, spreading the skin to start IVs. There’s strength required–we do a LOT of lifting, and you need to be able to “feel” that lift.

So my first thought was, “not in the field”. There are admin tasks (working in an EMS pharmacy, equipment coordinator, supervisor, dispatcher) that came to mind as being a good fit for someone with the disability you describe, but field work….?

(By the way, I know a number of medics with leg prostheses; these are relatively common and very easy to work with. I’m all in favor of disabled medics. I just didn’t think the job was physically doable with this kind of disability.)

Then I asked. I went into an EMS group and asked some people from all across the country. And the answers I got surprised me.

They were mostly along the lines of “oh totally, there’s one in Pittsburgh, she kicks ass” or “my old partner had a prosthetic forearm and hand, she could medic circles around the rest of her class”. One instructor said they had a student with just such a prosthesis, and wasn’t sure how to teach; the student said “just let me figure it out”, and by the end of the night they were doing very sensitive skills better than their classmates.

Because of that group I know of at least a half-dozen medics here in the US with forearm and hand prostheses.

So yes. You can totally have a character with one forearm, who works as a paramedic for a living.

Thanks again for sending this in. It broadened my worldview.

xoxo, Aunt Scripty

The Rusted Wives Club

by Rusty

About every 3 months or so, I undergo a Cardiac Stress Test. It is not by any means a pleasurable medical experience and normally leads me to examine many of my life's questionable decisions. But none the less, this medical inquiry offers my loved ones a measured sense of reassurance that my old, rusted butt is going to keep paddling around this watery planet… just a little bit longer.

The seriousness of this medical procedure really should not be understated. To ensure that my heart - and head - are in the right place before I undergo this test, my wife encourages me to find my “Happy Place” by hanging out at the beach and surfing with the boys. She understands that a good morning in the surf helps relax me, calms me down, puts me into that zen type place, “that only a surfer knows.”

It took me three wives to find the right lady, but #3 totally gets me.

With my toes freshly sanded and hair still salty, I am ready to have all the wires and electrodes attached to my wrinkled body… I have to say, it sucks getting old. With each year the probing and prodding of my anatomy gets deeper and deeper, sometimes reaching soul piercing depths.

So this is how the test normally starts; again, this happens about once every three months... I come home from a sunny surf session and find all three of My wives, in My living room, sipping several bottles of My wine… 2 Former Wives + 1 Current Wife = Spousal Overload... Instant Heart Attack or what my doctor has diagnosed as a Cardiac Stress Test!

If I was actually hooked up to an EKG machine, at that shocking moment, it would fucking blow up!

These “Tres Señoras de Rusty” love to do this to me; they love to see the horror on my face, the fear in my eyes, the sweat build up on my upper lip. They love to redline Rusty’s old ticker!

Once the initial shock wears off, after I gulp down a glass of wine, the inevitable questions of my actual health come up. Because folks, here’s the bottom, without me, this “Rusted Wives Club” would have no financing!

This medical farce is actually a quarterly business meeting, called to order by the three owners’ of “Rusted Beauties.” Each quarter’s agenda consists of only one bullet point and that is simply my health; or rather their complex, non-medical assessment of my well-being and how that could affect their lavish purses. For the three of them, it is a fun afternoon of risk management done over a few bottles of wine. For me, it’s the fuel that will ensure that I outlive them all!

Aloha.

Arkham Asylum and its medical practices p1

What practice:

Electrotherapy (ETC) is actually used to treat severe depression, sucidal thoughts/behaviors, bipolar (mania/depression), and schizophrenia (Catonia). This treatment is also sometimes used in Dementia and pregnancy. This is usually used when medication doesn't work, the patient has had ETC before, or the sufferer needs the effects immediately because they can pose a threat (to self or others) in the time it takes the medication to take effect. This is all done with consent of the patient and possibly family.

Usually the patient is given muscle relaxers and asleep (anesthetic) before hand. While they sleep the device is placed on their head and a controlled electric current is used producing a brief brain seizure. The patient usually doesn't remember the producer and is carefully monitored and is repeated three times a week.

Side effects: Temporary confusion, retrograde amnesia, temporary nausea, headache, muscle ache and medical complications.

(www.webmd.com, www.mayoclinic.org, www.mind.org.uk)

How Arkham Asylum is shown using it:

If you've seen/read whatever anything with Arkham Asylum or the inmates chances are this treatment has been show or referenced. This makes sense as ETC is still used today and I'd be lying if I said that none of the inmates need it. However personally I don't think it's shown/done correctly.

The staff apparently missed the part about the patients being asleep during the procedure as patients laughing (Joker) seem to be a common occurrence. Also how Sparks seem to fly while it's happening when that would probably kill or at least fry the brain. Another thing is how the patients are strapped down, something I didn't mention was that the Patient is LAYING DOWN not sitting in a freaking chair!

Arguably Arkham may not even ask the patients for consent (which kinda makes sense it'd be weird to just have a page of a comic having an inmate sign paperwork). Another thing is which rogues get the treatment I'm no doctor/psychologist/ therapist whatever so I can't say if a certain rogue needs it or not.

If I'm seeing this correctly then it makes a lot of sense so many inmates are not getting better and are always eager to escape. Hell I bet Bruce Wayne and Batman have quite a few things to say to the staff at Arkham.

To add:

Sadly whenever it's shown in the Batman universe it looks like it simply feeds into the public opinion of ETC which is a shame because even though it was horrific in the past it's helped so many people today.

At the end all I wanna add is PLEASE do research into this stuff creators you don't need to know everything about but a quick Google search reveals it's not that horrific, at least today! If y'all would like me to discuss another treatment in Arkham please let me know!
