At the risk of sounding anti-intellectual, I think that college should be free and also not a requirement for employment outside of highly specialized career fields

Title card reading: [Storyboarding Basics. Brought to you by NU Animation Club, March 23 2023]. There is a chibi drawing of Feeb drawing on a CINTIQ
Types of shots: Distance from the camera Close shot: intimacy, emphasis on charater emotion. Example is a close up shot of Gandalf’s face from Fellowship of the Ring. Long shot: grandiose, emphasis on location. Example is a long shot of Legolas, Gimli, and Aragorn arriving at Rohan, visible on a hill in the distance, from the Two Towers. Note: never start with a close shot. Start with as much location as possible to set the stage for your audience
Rule of thirds: Divide the screen into thirds horizontally and vertically. Try and keep focal points (like eyes) where the lines intersect! Incorrect example shows Araluna from Archmage Ascending with her eyes below the top third horizontal line. Correct example shows Araluna from Archmage Ascending with her eyes on the top third horizontal line.
Don’t cut characters off: make sure not to cut off a shot at the characters’ joints. Be especially careful of knees, elbows, hips. Incorrect example shows a shot of Power and Denji posing for the camera. The left side of the frame cuts off at Power’s wrist. The bottom of the frame cuts off at Denji’s ankles. Correct example shows a shot of Power and Denji posing for the camera. The left side of the frame cuts off at Power’s forearm. The bottom of the frame cuts off at Denji’s calves.
What is “shorthand”? Shorthand: a very simplified art style for storybordd that prioritized shape Do: include shape, size, expression Do not: include detail Example is an image of Ryuk from Death Note besides a shorthand drawing of him to scale. These are NOT illustrations / lineart, they are GUIDES!
Perspective & Gridlines: It is NECESSARY to include gridlines to make your perspective clear for the background artist. An incorrect example shows Araluna falling on a blank background. Three correct examples show the same image with gridlines in the background. One shows the gridline as a flat ground. The other shows the gridlone a slanted background in fish eye perspective. The last shows the gridline as a receding wall parallel to the character.
Perspective cheat code: No matter how close characters* are to the camera, the horizontal line will always cross them at the same part of their body. * must be the same height Incorrect example shows the horizon line cross Dokja Kim at his shoulders and Junghyeok Yoo, who is in the background, at his knees. Correct example shows the horizon line cross Dokja Kim and Junghyeok Yoo, who is in the background, at their shoulders.
Perspective tip! Try to avoid having the horizon line run through the middle of the screen. Raising or lowering the the horizon gives your shots a cinematic feel. Incorrect shot of Riza Hawkeye running in a forest has the horizon line crossing the center of the frame. Incorrect shot of Riza Hawkeye running in a forest has the horizon line crossing close to the top of the frame. Incorrect shot of Riza Hawkeye running in a forest has the horizon line crossing close to the bottom of the frame.

a couple snippets from a presentation i gave at school this past week on storyboarding!!

‼️DISCLAIMER: I am still a student and have only worked on student and indie projects! This is just stuff that I personally find helpful as an amateur, so feel free to take it with a grain of salt!

Happy boarding, friends! ✍️💕

with regards to learning it may be important to know about IEOD(illusion of explanation depth) which may sometimes lead us to believe we understand more about the world than we think this can be especially true for those with an intuitive preference i write this because I've fallen for it too I hope this helps

I have discussed such learning problems in previous posts. After spending many years teaching, tutoring, and coaching students from a variety of backgrounds, in a variety of subjects, it never ceases to amaze me just how little people understand about learning. I believe that basic knowledge of learning theory is necessary for optimizing the learning process, if one hopes to be a good student of anything.

With so much information at the fingertips, it's more important than ever that people are mindful about how they learn. Being in the role of "student" is hard because you're a newbie and you're ignorant and you don't know the best way to tackle a big subject. Without a good teacher or an expert to guide you, you might come to rely on dubious sources of information, misinterpret what you read, misapply the ideas, or hit a seemingly insurmountable block/plateau.

Unfortunately, there are not enough good teachers to go around. Unfortunately, many teachers in public education are tasked with "babysitting" rather than teaching, to the detriment of learning. As a result, too many students get to high school, i.e., into adulthood, without a solid foundation of study skills.

Just recently, I was helping a twelfth grade student with essay writing. Being a good student, they couldn't understand why they kept getting low marks in writing despite putting a lot of effort into the assignments. Turns out, they kept submitting summaries of the literature when the teacher was explicitly asking for analysis of the literature. When I brought this problem to their attention, they were even more confused, because they thought they had been doing analysis all along. They had no clue that there was a difference between summary and analysis, so they were incapable of getting to the level of depth that the teacher was demanding.

One of the first things I often have to do with students is explain the difference between lower order vs higher order learning. Lower order learning is usually enough to pass the class throughout K-12 or achieve basic competency. Higher order learning moves people into expert territory. Without a clear vision of what they should be aspiring to, students tend to get stuck in lower order learning.

The difference between lower and higher order learning is neatly summarized by Bloom's Taxonomy, a conceptual framework for evaluating cognitive/intellectual ability. It breaks down the learning process into six categories/levels: 1) remember, 2) understand, 3) apply, 4) analyze, 5) evaluate, 6) create. Since it's hard to quantify exactly what's happening in a student's mind during learning, this framework helps by asking concrete questions about what the student can or cannot do.

My student got stuck at level 2 when the average requirement for the class was 4. They gave me a sample essay that their teacher considered to be "excellent" and it was easily at 5. While they could "feel" that there was a difference between their own essay and the excellent essay, they weren't able to articulate the difference at all.

One learning problem that people, Ns especially, often suffer is that they tend to get ahead of themselves, which is related to illusion of explanation depth. It's basically trying to run before walking. For example:

they believe "gist" is enough and dismiss details

they conflate knowing (theory) and doing (real world)

they judge/conclude without proper analysis

they try to create without mastering the basics

The above problems arise when a person doesn't realize how much they don't know (and in the case of an unhealthy personality, they refuse to acknowledge it). My student (N) is a good example. They believed that being able to do level 2 stuff (paraphrase, summarize, interpret, give examples) qualified as level 4 "analysis" and that this meant they had "mastered" the material. They simply didn't know any better or that more was possible. It wasn't until I explained to them the differences between lower and higher order learning that they began to realize how low-level their writing actually was.

I've talked before about the differences between a good student vs a good learner. A simple way to think about it: A good student is preoccupied with proving how much they know, so they are mainly motivated by extrinsic rewards or egotistical gain. By contrast, a good learner is preoccupied with how much they don't know, so they are mainly motivated by intrinsic rewards or intellectual humility that naturally breeds intellectual curiosity.

C.A.R.E and M.I.N.E

These two poems are part of a set of four, so that's why H.O.P.E. is mentioned!

C.A.R.E. is for

Concern for those around me, even if it’s not reflected

A is for altruism- work in progress, but I’ll try

R for resilience because that’s what I’ll need to practice, and

Effusion for e because four walls can’t stop my thoughts

C.A.R.E. stands for care and nothing more

Because caring is a skill I will learn to adore

C.A.R.E. is to experience the world

Painful and confusing though it ends up at times

But I won’t stay in these walls forevermore

Because I’ve only ever learned outside of the halls

C.A.R.E. is how I’ll start to live

Even if I begin to wish the box was still with me

Only with the will to fly will I reach the sky

And only from the heights will my path begin to be mine.

———————

M.I.N.E. is for

M will be for mindful, learning to adapt

I is for inspired by those around me every day

N is for natural and being me in my entirety

E is back to effervescent because that’s who I want to be

M.I.N.E. is for a willingness to grow

Because now I want to learn how nobody is the same

I’m fascinated, please, teach me what you know

Let me make a library and place your book inside

M.I.N.E. to adapt and overcome

The way it’s uncomfortable will show me how to grow

Nothing good ever came without struggle, so I know

Giving up is easy, but I will keep moving on.

And a fall is just an opportunity

To learn and fly again

H.O.P.E. wasn’t right, in the end

M.I.N.E. for the person I want to be

C.A.R.E for the person I owe it to

Giving up is easy but M is to be mindful

Of my actions and the consequences that they will always bring

So giving up is easy, but I will learn to fly.

Never too old to learn.

Today I learned that you can smell a mint plant by basically giving it a grab n stroke. I also learned what one version of a wormwood plant looks like and that Modelo Negra is at least acceptable as long as ya don't let it sit too long. To be fair though, I'm not really a beer person so all of them struggle to impress me completely. I also learned that the mint plant I chose SHOULD help eliminate the regrowth of some of the danger plants in the one section of my yard. This, was VERY pleasing information. I also learned that chicken and waffles, as goofy as it sounds, can be an enjoyable combination. Yes, today... was very educational. lol

Reflection...

It has come to my attention that I have not yet really played with reflections in photography. It seems to be such a popular thing and yet, I dig and find... I don't really have any of that sort of thing. Reflections in calm lakes, mirror and glass sorts of reflections... hmmm. I'm not feeling great today so maybe I'll see about trying some of that with some small items.

Learning.

Hah.. so today was the trial and error section of learning how to create an instructional sort of video. There are so many things one does not think about until doing something like this. The first "fail" was finding out that my phone camera had reset itself to photo instead of video. The second "fail" was figuring out that half of what I was doing was actually out of the sideways (oops) frame. The third "fail" was realizing that once I completed the biggest part of the project, the item I needed to show the final "test" was nowhere close to my workstation. hahaha I have made adjustments and will try again soon... HOPEFULLY creating the video I wanted to create from the start and then, I will get it shared in the correct locations. The sharing of videos to certain spots was something I finally tested the rest of the way yesterday so i feel fairly confident that it will go where I want it to go. hahaha Life is fun sometimes. Enjoy.

Old dogs CAN learn new tricks!

It's fun. When we're young we get shoved in many directions by those who are supposed to be "teaching" us. We don't realize just how broken most of those folks are and to be fair, they usually don't have a clue either. As we grow and experience life, we get shoved around by reality and forced to play by certain rules because well, things don't slow down long enough in many cases to realize there are other options. Here's where I giggle and say again... broken humans creating broken humans. But, if we're lucky... there comes a point where we can take a breath, look around, see just how twisty things, situations, and people really are.... and begin to rethink how we want to navigate our way through the chaos. That's where I'm at. It's messy. I make mistakes. I wander around clueless a lot. I flop onto the floor and just wait for things to give me less of a headache. I try new things. I laugh and cross some things off my try, or try again, lists. And sometimes... I squeal like a hyper six year old and giggle bounce trying to show anyone who will pay attention my most recent accomplishment... even if sometimes it seems MUCH bigger to me than it would to ANYONE else. hahaha The important part here is that I'm learning a LOT about who I am, who I was sort of forced to pretend to be, and how the actual me can function more smoothly in the world of twisty humans. I'm beginning to understand glitches, adjust my priorities, find new ways of seeking the options I want, and having plenty of fun in the process. I really wish I could have done this when my brain and body were a bit more... cooperative but hey... take it when ya get it right? heh Anyway... I've shared. I hope you're having some fun in the little glimmery moments of life. Laters.

I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again but it is absolutely an example of civilizational inadequacy that only deaf people know ASL

“oh we shouldn’t teach children this language, it will only come in handy if they [checks notes] ever have to talk in a situation where it’s noisy or they need to be quiet”

I had my very first big mood swing yesterday! I got uncharacteristically upset at my partner, it wasn't very cool of me. We had a talk and everything was okay in the end, but that instance was weird. And the moodswing didn't end there! I continued to have the most intense panic-cry I've had in weeks. It was really not fun. My Mister stuck by me and weathered the storm, he was so helpful to me, even though I'd been so rude to him earlier.

When I was ready to emerge from the cave, he suggested I sit on the floor in front of the couch so he could play with my hair. I asked if we could watch an instructional video on how to use my brand new ROUND HAIR-BRUSH!!!!!!🌠🌠🌠 He agreed, and we sat down to practice. He pet me and called me a good girl.

Well. Apparently you need a fucking blow dryer to use round brushes! Guess what; I didn't fuckin know that. I dont have one! But Mister was so determined to help me feel better that he tried to follow along with the video as best he could to get it down before we added a blow dryer someday when I could afford one. He brushed my hair for at least an hour and a half as I dove into a femme self-care tutorial video RABBITHOLE. We watched a "how-to do a 90's blowout!" and "here's my everything shower routine!" and "my Coachella nails for 2024!" and more.

Each video taught me so fucking much it was incredible honestly. The everything shower video told me I should be shampooing twice, conditioning only the mids-ends of my hair, etc. While the Coachella Nails video taught me a certain level of what to expect if I wanted to go get my nails done at a salon (maybe?), but it also realized within me: Hand/Nail dysphoria.

I stared at my hands for maybe 10 minutes noticing how thick, lined, and scarred they are. Even though my hands are soft they don't look soft. The video host's fingers were so slender, long, elegant. Mine are stubby in comparison. My nails are so short because I bite them when I have nothing else to fidget with. Her nails were at least an inch long on her nailbed, it was like they were groomed specifically for nail art and extensions (i suppose they were). I've never thought about my hands before. I used to like having scarred hands. But now they make me feel sick.

I needed a change of pace. I switched to a video that detailed tips and tricks for DIY alt/goth fashion by a channel called Rattus Rattus. Loved it. Only made it 20 minutes in as it was 1:30am and I was fading. Captivated by each of the videos telling me how to achieve a certain level of high-maintenace girlhood, my eyes drooped closed until i could keep them open no longer. I lied down on the floor and fell asleep until my husband decided it was time to sleep in a real bed.

Anyway. Big day yesterday for learning and new experiences. It was intense. Time for sleep.

After 3 Years Of Being A 3D Artist Kinda Guy I’m Finally Learning To Draw Properly And I’ve Gotta

After 3 years of being a 3D artist kinda guy I’m finally learning to draw properly and I’ve gotta say it’s like      fun :> Bit easier to learn proportions than I expected (tho that might be because I made characters in 3D already which also required proportions) One thing I’m still really struggling with is perspective,    ironically enough. I’ve been working with sculpting so much that any deformation of the original form (which is kinda required when drawing) just feels so wrong lol Oh well!!! Hoping I can get that resolved some time and in the meantime, if anyone has any like drawing for dummies books they’d like to recommend please send those recommendations my way :> I could really use some theory I think
